A walk with God, Day 14: Temptation IV
The period of Lent is a time when we’re called upon to sharpen our senses to recognise all the entry points for temptation. Once we are on the alert, chances are that we will be ready for battle and thus, overcome temptation. One important tool in overcoming or resisting temptation is prayer. Without it we are doomed. We need to ask for God’s help and pray ahead of time in order that our inner man will be strong to resist the devil. In Matthew 26:41, Jesus asked His disciples to keep watch and pray that they may not fall into temptation, but they slept instead of praying; therefore, they failed woefully when the test time came.
The more we speak to God, the stronger we become and the more satan gets scared of us; however, he never backs off in tempting us. Prayer builds a relationship with God and makes our hearts amenable to the Holy Spirit at all times. Therefore they will constantly give us grace to overcome.
St. Francis De Sales said we should not despair when we are tempted, but pray to God the more fervently that He may see fit to help us, for according to the word of Paul, He will make issue with temptation that we may be able to bear it. This tool of prayer is thus tried and tested. It is important to arm ourselves with it before the time of test. Jesus was a man of prayer.
When you come face to face with temptation, you can make the sign of the Cross or say short ejaculatory prayers like “Lord Jesus, have mercy on me”, “Come, Holy Spirit” and the like. These ejaculatory prayers sanctify the moment for us and takes our mind to God and the things of God. Our guardian angels are also there to help so we can invite them to assist us. St. John Bosco advised that when tempted, we should invoke our Angel, and he is more eager to help us than we are to be helped! Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him: He trembles and flees at the sight of your Guardian Angel.
Jesus our master and friend resisted and overcame temptation and so did the saints; so we also have what it takes to have victory over our temptation. But know that prayer can do little during the time of test when we have not armed ourselves with it before the test. Pray increasingly.
