The Brain Battle Quiz, BBQ a national Inter-Junior High Schools Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM TV Quiz Competition featuring 144 Junior High Basic Schools in all the 16 regions across the country, had a press briefing and official launch of its 2nd edition on Wednesday 10th March, 2021at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka Accra.
The idea is to develop a well-skilled human capital for Ghana by empowering the young ones with practical skills that tap their future abilities.
The guest of honour, Ing. Dr Ken. Ashiegbey (CEO of Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications) who joined online due to some unforeseen circumstances entreated every student to participate and not only the contestants.
At the press launch held at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka Accra, the acting manager and Greater Accra Regional Manager of Catholic Schools, Mrs Josephine Asoo, in her welcome address, said that in the 2020 edition, they witnessed an exciting practical based contest.
“The programme yielded several innovative science projects in addition to the battle of ideas in the practical based quiz category. For instance, the winner of the science project category used an innovative technique to produce electricity which could charge mobile phones from urine in response to the environmental crises posed by several unauthorized urinals surrounding its school premise in the Western Region,” she said.
She added that “this and many other intriguing projects discovered through this programme encouraged us to sustain it to drive the national agenda of producing problem-solving scientists.”
The CEO of Cocktail Media, Mr Samuel Owusu-Boateng, in his address stated the mode and the road map for the 2021 edition. He said the two mandatory categories of this year’s contest are the national junior scientist project category and the practical based quiz contest.
He said the contest will involve not only theory but live practical.
Mr Samuel Owusu-Boateng said the competition is for children from the Ghanaian home and not only for Catholics. He said going forward, non-catholic schools will be involved.
The Brain Battle Quiz is organised by the Catholic Education Directorate in collaboration with Cocktail Media. The competition seeks to bring pupils in the Catholic Junior High Schools together in the aspects of Science, Mathematics, and Technology with the winning school taking GH₵10,000.00 worth of science equipment for the school, a branded trophy and GH₵500.00 savings account, certificates and souvenirs for the contestants of winning school.
The second gets GH₵ 5,000.00 worth of science equipment for the school, GH₵300.00 saving account, certificates and souvenir for the contestants.
The third also gets GH₵2,000.00 worth of science equipment for the school, GH₵ 200 cedis saving account, certificates and souvenir for the contestants.
There will also be a consolation prize for all contestants for the quiz category.
