Fr. Patrick writes: Greater Love III

A walk with God, Day 37: Greater Love III

As we approach the celebration of the Holy Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) and Jesus’ suffering and death approaches, it seems like disappointment, disgrace, shame and embarrassment are imminent. Yet all this is an accomplishment and fulfilment of the Father’s plan for Him. It demonstrates God’s infinite love for all humanity.

The death of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary brought justice to bear upon death. Death has justice done to it at the price of the death of the one who was without sin and who alone was able to inflict death upon death by means of His own death. By accepting the wages of our sin, He is now able to activate His own life in us. In this way the death of Jesus Christ renders full justice to God.

The death of Jesus Christ on the Cross is also a witness to the strength of evil against the Son of God, who was totally innocent and free from sin. But greater than this, the cross is a radical revelation of the mercy of God or the love that conquers sin and death. Hardly will anyone willingly receive the pain and shame that is due another; Jesus readily took all our shame, pain and even death that we may live.

The cross is the torch of God’s eternal love that brightens the darkness of sin and death in our lives. “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life. ” The death on the cross is the most profound way God showed His love towards us in order to save us. What other evidence do we need to completely and totally accept and reciprocate this love?
