Fr. Patrick writes: And There Was Silence.

A walk with God: Day 40 … And There Was Silence.

On this day, Holy Saturday, the whole world is hushed. There is a deafening silence because God sleeps in the flesh. The maker of Heaven and Earth and all that dwell therein, lies motionless in the tomb. For the disciples at that time, this situation was incomprehensible and it therefore threw them into a state of confusion.

Just like these disciples, we sometimes get to a point where we become discouraged, dispirited and dejected, and we harbour a lot of questions in our heart; our minds are clouded and we begin to think that there is no light at the end of the tunnel and all seems lost. Holy Saturday should teach us to be patient because while Jesus slept in the flesh, He was accomplishing great things- raising the dead who had gone on before Him, to give them new life.

Holy Saturday teaches us to patiently bear those times in our lives when waiting is all we can do – when we are deprived of light, when we feel hopeless and sometimes unable to even pray. It is the paschal wake that will usher in the paschal joy, to celebrate the great Day of the Lord.

Holy Saturday teaches us to be hopeful. Yes, we may have many moments of darkness and silence in our lives, but when we persevere and endure patiently, the waiting will end in resurrection to bring us newness, light and peace.
