Pope explains the role of prayer in the Church

Francis proposed in the general audience “to remember and thank the people who, since we were children, and throughout our lives, taught us to pray.”

He added that “the Christian life is not exempt from moments of crisis and difficulties” and that thanks to the power of prayer the faith is persevered.

“Let us bear in mind that when the Evil One wants to fight the Church, the first thing he does is try to prevent us from praying, to extinguish in us the light of faith,” he added.

For this reason, “one of the main tasks of the Church is to pray and teach the new generations to pray.”

SUMMARY OF CATECHESIS IN SPANISH

Dear brothers and sisters:

In this catechesis we reflect on the Church as a teacher of prayer. It is good to remember and thank the people who, since we were children, and throughout our lives, taught us to pray. In the moments of prayer that we share both in the family — which is the domestic Church — and in the parish community or other Christian groups, we discover that we grow in faith as we learn to pray and we deepen this experience.

The Christian life is not exempt from moments of crisis and difficulties. We see it in the testimony of the saints, in the trials they had to face. But they teach us that the secret to continue walking in faith is the power of prayer, because thanks to it they were able to persevere and sustain others on their pilgrimage.

Let us follow his example, and bear in mind that when the Evil One wants to fight the Church, the first thing he does is try to prevent us from praying, to extinguish the light of faith in us.

One of the main tasks of the Church is to pray and teach the new generations to pray. Throughout history, communities and groups dedicated to prayer have always emerged. If we do not pray, faith is extinguished, we cannot see the ways to evangelize or recognize the faces of the brothers and sisters who need us. For this reason the Church, which is a house and a school of communion, is also called to be a house and a school of prayer.

I cordially greet the Spanish-speaking pilgrims. Let us ask the risen Christ to help us keep the lamp of faith lit, to renew it daily with the oil of our humble and persevering prayer, and to send us his Spirit so that we can bring his Light to all. God bless you.
