Pope accepts resignation of bishop accused of failing to investigate sexual abuse

Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Michael Hoeppner, 71, of the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota, United States.

The statement published by the diocese explains the Pope asked the bishop to resign after an investigation started in 2017 for not having followed the applicable rules when he was presented with complaints of sexual abuse involving clergy from the Diocese of Crookston.

The prelate allegedly pressured a seminarian to drop an accusation of sexual abuse by a priest.

Provisionally, the Bishop Emeritus of Des Moines will be the Apostolic Administrator of the diocese until the appointment of a new bishop.
