“For the Uyghurs, living the faith is equivalent to choosing death”

The persecution of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang by the Chinese regime has been described as a genocide by Human Rights Defenders.

The United States Embassy to the Holy See organized an online seminar to alert people to this tragic situation. Gulchehra Hoja, a journalist and Uighur, shared her own experience of the harsh persecution.

“Unfortunately, the Chinese government considers any religion to be a threat to its rule and therefore it is doing everything possible to get away with this genocide by silencing all of us, including me .

The Chinese regime has sent at least 24 members of the Hoja family to concentration camps, and she has been charged with terrorism and is placed on a watch list.

“For today’s Uyghurs, choosing faith is equivalent to choosing death. However, they have not lost faith in justice. They are there. True believers. They are paying the price with their lives ”.

Since 2018, more than 15,000 mosques and cemeteries have been destroyed in the Uighur regions. And as of June 2020, 613 imams have been reported missing.

It all started when a surveillance system was established. Then, from 2017 to 2019, the Uighurs were incarcerated en masse. And since 2019 they have been subjected to forced labor, forced sterilization, torture and death.

The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada have studied sanctions against China because of the campaigns against the Uighurs.
