Angelus: Pope calls for humanitarian aid for Myanmar and refugees

After praying the Angelus this Sunday, the Pope joined the bishops of Myanmar, who ask to open humanitarian corridors to help the population, and that buildings of worship be respected as places of refuge.

Myanmar has lived under a military dictatorship for four months, after the military coup that toppled the government.

FRANCISCO
“May the Heart of Jesus touch the hearts of all and bring peace to Myanmar.”

In May, the Pope celebrated a Mass for Peace in Myanmar as a show of solidarity with the Burmese people, and asked them to remain united.

FRANCISCO
“I know that some political and social situations are bigger than you. However, the commitment to peace and brotherhood always comes from below: each one, with small gestures, can do something.”

The Pope also recalled in the Angelus that the World Refugee Day promoted by the UN was celebrated. This year’s theme was “Together we heal, we learn and we shine.”

FRANCISCO
“Let us open our hearts to the refugees; let us make their sorrows and their joys ours; let us learn from them a courageous capacity for recovery.”

The Pope related the situation of the refugees to the Gospel of Sunday Mass, in which the disciples put their faith in Jesus to overcome the storm.

Before leaving, the Pope greeted pilgrims who came to see him from as far away as Poland and Peru.
