Pope Francis Appoints Rev. Fr. John Baptist Attakruh as Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese on his feast day

His Holiness Pope Francis has officially appointed Very Rev. Father John Baptist Attakruh as the new Bishop of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese here in Ghana as Catholic faithful in the world over celebrates the birth of St. John the Baptist.

The appointment released from the office of the  Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana by Msgr. Maher Chammas was made public, in the early hours of today Thursday, June 24, 2021, as the Secretary-General of NCS, Very Rev. Fr. Lazarus Anondee read to the ears of all and sundry:

“His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Father John Baptist Attakruh as the new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sekondi- Takoradi.”

Born in October 1957, fr. Attakruh was ordained a Priest of the Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi on July 30, 1989. His first appointment was to Immaculate Conception Parish as Assistant Priest from 1989 to 1991.

He was then appointed as Vice-Rector of St. Mary’s Minor Seminary in Apowa and at the same time, he was a tutor and Chaplain at St. Mary’s Boys’ Secondary School and Director of Vocations of the Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi.

From 1992 to 1995 he studied at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of St. Anselm in Rome where he obtained a Licentiate in Sacred Liturgy.

Very Rev. Fr. John Baptist has been serving as the Apostolic Administrator for the Catholic Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi “with all the rights and faculties of a Local Ordinary”.until his new appointment as the official shepherd of the local area.
