Consecrated religious life: “It fascinates you, like falling in love”

Each World Day of Consecrated Life, Pope Francis celebrates Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica to honor consecrated religious like Maria Luisa Berzosa.

-She’s a nun too!
-Yes, this lady is a nun, a daughter of Jesus, but the theologians say Jesus didn’t have daughters.
-Well, some found a way.
-You see!

“It is a way of reminding us, who have already made this choice, and to remind the Church and the world of this special option to surrender one’s life to the Lord and His cause.”

Maria Luisa is a Daughters of Jesus, and one of three women appointed as consultors for the ongoing Synod. An event, she says, makes this year’s celebration of consecrated religious life all the more important.

“The Synod gives us in consecrated life the opportunity to reflect, to be revitalized, and the consecrated life offers synod an interesting exchange.”

For this religious sister, consecrated life remains an attractive way of life in the modern world for those who want to radically deepen their relationship with Jesus.

“I believe it is an attraction to the person of Jesus. That is, it is something personal that touches you and it makes sense to give your life to that cause. It fascinates you, like falling in love, but something moves you and touches you inside and you say, it is worthwhile for me to give my life to this cause, isn’t it?”

According to the latest data published by the Vatican, there are over 630,000 women consecrated religious in the world, more than 130,000 religious priests, and 50,000 non-ordained religious men who have dedicated their lives to exactly that.
