Good Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church
Last Friday, Catholics around the world, including parishioners of the Holy Family Catholic Church at Mataheko, Accra, marked Good Friday with the traditional Stations of the Cross procession, a symbolic, communal journey with Christ to the cross.
In a message to the faithful, the Assistant Priest of Holy Family Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. John Kwame Owiredu, reminded Catholics that following Christ is not a matter of picking and choosing. “We call it Good Friday because Christ overcame death to assure us that if we believe in Him, we too shall rise with Him after death,” he said.
He emphasized that participating in the Stations of the Cross procession can bring spiritual solutions to life’s problems, stating, “We do what has been handed down to us for centuries.”
The procession began with a moving dramatization of Jesus’ suffering on the cross, performed by the church’s youth. The re-enactment set a solemn tone for the rest of the devotional event.
The Stations of the Cross hold deep meaning for Catholics on Good Friday. Each of the 14 stations represents a moment in Jesus’ final journey, from His condemnation to His burial. Through this devotion, Catholics meditate on Christ’s passion, express their gratitude, deepen their faith, and participate spiritually in His suffering and sacrifice.
