St. Peter Parish Celebrates Historic Homecoming of Bishop Louis

St. Peter Catholic Church, Tema Newtown climaxed their four-day homecoming and pastoral visit of Most Rev. John Kobina Louis, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra. on Sunday, 13th July, 2025.

This special occasion marked Bishop Louis’ first pastoral visit to St. Peter Catholic Church, a parish he once served as a young priest in the early 1990s, as Auxiliary Bishop.

The celebration brought together clergy, dignitaries, traditional leaders, parishioners, and guests from far and near in a celebration of faith and community.

The climax of the visit featured the confirmation of 37 candidates, the 10th anniversary of the Catholic Women in the parish, and the presentation of awards to outstanding parishioners.

In his homily, Bishop Louis reflected on the day’s readings, drawing wisdom from the Book of James:

He stated, “If all we do is to hear and not act, we deceive ourselves.”

He urged the faithful to live out God’s commandments through love and action.

“Loving God and loving our neighbour should not only be spoken but seen in our daily lives. That’s the path to eternal life,” he said.

The Bishop commended the Parish Priest and leadership for the warm reception and successful planning of the four-day visit, which he described as “memorable and deeply touching.”

Two parishioners were honoured for their exemplary Christian living:
Mr. K. Danso, Best Father 2024
Mrs. Martha Adjetey, Best Mother 2024

Bishop Louis also blessed members of the Catholic Women’s Association, encouraging them to focus on issues that strengthen families and the Church.

“When you meet, talk about good parenting and strong marriages, these are the foundations of a strong church,” he urged.

Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Member of Parliament for Tema East, commended the Church for its spiritual and social contributions to the community.

He said, “The love, commitment, and reception I receive here always warms my heart”.

He assured the parish of his continuous support and announced plans to refurbish the school’s computer lab, provide additional computers, and complete the classroom blocks.

“The Catholic Church has been a pillar in health and education. Together, we can make education in Tema even better,” he added.

Most Rev. John Kobina Louis served the parish from 1992 to 1995 as part of his pastoral duties while based at Our Lady of Mercy, Tema Community 1.

He was also the Archdiocesan Chaplain for the Sea Apostolate and Youth Chaplain for the Tema-Battor Deanery, roles in which he nurtured the faith of many in the area.
