Bishops in Ghana Launch Pre-preparatory Committee for 150th Anniversary of Catholicism in Ghana

The Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and Bishop of Sunyani, has announced the establishment of a Pre-preparatory Committee to plan the 2030 celebration of 150 years of the Catholic Church in Ghana, inviting all faithful to support the effort with prayer and renewed missionary enthusiasm.
Speaking at the closing Mass of the 2025 Plenary Assembly of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference at the St. Anne’s Cathedral in Damongo, Bishop Gyamfi noted that the committee will guide national reflections and design a program for the historic celebration.
He said, “The Committee will guide the Church’s reflections and propose a fitting programme for this historic jubilee.”
Bishop Gyamfi in a communique, urged all Catholics to support the committee with prayer and renewed missionary commitment, saying, “All Catholic faithful are invited to support their work with prayer, while nurturing a spirit of gratitude, enthusiasm and renewed missionary commitment as we journey toward this significant milestone”.
He also extended congratulations to the Dioceses of Damongo, Jasikan, Keta-Akatsi, Konongo-Mampong, and Obuasi on their 30th anniversaries, and to the Archdioceses of Cape Coast, Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and the former Diocese of Keta on their 75th.
“We take the opportunity to express our immense gratitude to all the Lay faithful, Catechists, Missionaries and Bishops whose efforts and dedication resulted in the planting of the Church in our country”, he added.
The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, as part of its activities during its 2025 2025 Plenary Assembly visited some of the Savannah region’s historic and cultural landmarks, including the Mole National Park and the ancient Larabanga Mosque.
They also had the opportunity to pay a courtesy call to some prominent figures in the Savannah Region, including Damongo Wura Seidu Kelly Boresa I, Paramount Chief of the Damongo Traditional Area, and Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency and former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
