Catholic Bishops in Ghana Urge National Commitment to Justice and Peace as Moral Foundation for Ghana’s Renewal

At the closing of their 2025 Plenary Assembly in Damongo, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has issued a strong appeal for a renewed national commitment to justice and peace, stating that Ghana’s social cohesion, moral integrity, and democratic stability depend on the active pursuit of these values.

The Bishops emphasized that justice and peace are inseparable pillars of any dignified society and flow directly from Catholic Social Teaching.

According to a communiqué issued by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, justice requires that the rights and dignity of all citizens must be upheld, with peace as the fruit of right relationships built on fairness, respect, and accountability.

Drawing from their week-long discussions and engagements, the Bishops noted that the increasing political polarization, inequality, and corruption in the country threatens national unity.

Their reflections were also influenced by earlier interactions with traditional authorities during the Plenary, including their visit to the Yagbonwura and other chiefs who shared concerns about land conflicts, youth unemployment, and community tensions.

The Bishops warned that when injustice persists, whether through poor governance, lack of transparency, or social exclusion, peace becomes fragile.

They reiterated that faith must translate into social responsibility, quoting Christifideles Laici: “A faith that does not become culture is a faith not fully received.”

The communiqué further urged the Church herself to model justice internally through transparency, accountability, and preferential care for the poor, stressing that its witness becomes credible only when its actions reflect the Gospel it proclaims.

With Ghana facing moral and socio-economic challenges, the Bishops have called for a national conversion, inviting government, Parliament, civil society, traditional rulers, the media, and all citizens to work together toward building a just and peaceful Ghana.
