Archbishop John Bonaventure Kwofie’s new directives on Lenten Charity 2026

On Monday, 23 February 2026, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, John Bonaventure Kwofie, issued new directives to guide the implementation of the Church’s Lenten Charity Initiative for 2026.
In a statement addressed to priests, religious, and lay faithful, the Archbishop commended the clergy and parishioners for their commitment and collective efforts in sustaining the initiative, describing their contributions as instrumental in bringing the project to life.
To enhance participation and accessibility, Archbishop Kwofie outlined three key approaches for this year’s Lenten charity drive.
First, he announced the introduction of a digital phase. Flyers bearing the “Legacy of Hope” Mobile Money (MOMO) number will be circulated across all parishes. Parishioners who wish to make weekly donations electronically are encouraged to do so using the appropriate reference format: “Lent” and the name of their parish.
Secondly, he directed pastors and Parish Pastoral Councils (PPCs) to adopt an envelope system. Specially designated envelopes, marked “LEGACY OF HOPE” at the top left corner, will be distributed to distinguish them from other parish collections. Parishioners may also use personal envelopes clearly labeled “LEGACY OF HOPE” to submit their weekly contributions toward the project.
As a third measure, the Archbishop advised parishioners who receive the envelopes to retain them throughout the Lenten season and make their cumulative donation at the end of Lent.
He expressed confidence that the introduction of multiple giving options would ensure broader participation, enabling all members of the Archdiocese to contribute meaningfully to the Lenten observance through acts of charity.
