Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka, Celebrates Palm Sunday Solemnity

The Holy Spirit Cathedral at Adabraka was filled with devotion on Sunday, March 29, 2026, as Catholic faithful from across the Archdiocese of Accra joined the Metropolitan Archbishop, John Bonaventure Kwofie, to celebrate the Solemnity of Palm Sunday.
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week in the Church’s liturgical calendar and commemorates Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem before His Passion. It also signifies the final Sunday of Lent.
The celebration began with the blessing of palm branches led by the Auxiliary Bishop of Accra, John Kobina Louis. Following the blessing, the faithful processed within the cathedral grounds, waving palm branches joyfully while singing and dancing into the church.
In his homily, Archbishop Kwofie reflected on the significance of the Recycle Cross, crafted from e-waste collected in Agbogbloshie, as a symbol of transformation and hope. He emphasized the importance of environmental responsibility, urging the faithful to deepen their relationship with Christ while committing to the care of creation.
The Archbishop also highlighted the example of Christ’s humility, referencing the washing of the disciples’ feet as a profound lesson in service. He encouraged the faithful to emulate this spirit by serving others with love and compassion, particularly the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized.
“The Last Supper was more than just a meal; it was a covenant of love and a new commandment to love one another as Christ has loved us,” he stated.
Archbishop Kwofie expressed gratitude to the President of Missio Aachen, Dirk Bingener, and his delegation from Germany, as well as Sr. Mercy Benson, SSpS, the SSpS Sisters, artisan Iddrisu Salifua and his family, and the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) office for their collaboration and support in promoting the City of God Recycle Cross initiative.
In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Bingener thanked the Archbishop for his warm hospitality and the opportunity to participate in the Palm Sunday celebration in Ghana. He noted that the message of the Recycle Cross aligns deeply with the spiritual journey of Holy Week, which focuses on the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
He expressed hope that the Recycle Cross would inspire acts of charity and care for both humanity and the environment, stating, “May this Recycle Cross be a sign of hope to all, encouraging us to support those in need and to care for God’s creation.”

The celebration concluded with the presentation of customized kente sashes symbolizing the Recycle Cross by the Archdiocese of Accra.
