His Holiness Pope Leo XIV began a historic apostolic journey to Africa from 13–23 April 2026, with his first stop in Algeria before proceeding to Cameroon. His visit has been marked by strong messages of peace, justice, unity, and commitment to the common good.

Arriving in Cameroon, the Holy Father addressed authorities, members of civil society, and the diplomatic corps in Yaoundé. In his remarks, he emphasized that peace must be genuine and not reduced to a mere slogan. He called on all Cameroonians to recognize and appreciate their rich cultural diversity, urging them to use it as a source of unity and strength rather than division. Speaking at the Presidential Palace, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the beauty of Cameroon’s cultural heritage, describing it as a treasure that can serve as a solid foundation for lasting peace and fraternity. He explained that his visit was a sign of closeness and solidarity with the people, encouraging all citizens to work together for the common good.

The Holy Father reaffirmed the commitment of the Holy See to collaborate with Cameroon in promoting human dignity, justice, and religious freedom. Drawing from the teachings of past popes and inspired by the words of St. Augustine, he reminded leaders that true authority is rooted in service. He stressed that those in leadership must govern with love, responsibility, and dedication to all people, including those in opposition, while fostering harmony within society.

Addressing the realities of conflict and suffering, Pope Leo XIV poignantly noted that behind statistics are real people, families, stories, and shattered hopes. He reiterated his earlier appeal for peace, describing true peace as “unarmed and disarming,” capable of opening hearts and building trust among people.

The Pope further emphasized that peace is a shared responsibility. He urged leaders to listen attentively to the voices of the people, valuing their contributions in the pursuit of national harmony. He also expressed deep appreciation for the efforts of youth groups, trade unions, NGOs, and especially women, whom he described as “tireless peacemakers” working to build a better society.

On the issues of governance, integrity, and justice, the Holy Father strongly condemned corruption, noting that it undermines justice and distorts peace. He called for transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law, emphasizing that true justice is only possible when every person feels heard, respected, and valued.

In his concluding remarks, Pope Leo XIV invoked God’s blessings upon Cameroon and its people, praying: “May God bless Cameroon and grant the entire Cameroonian people the grace to welcome the Kingdom of God and build together a future of justice and peace.”

This visit serves as a powerful reminder to all of us of our shared responsibility to promote peace, unity, and justice in our communities.
