ARCHBISHOP KWOFIE CALLS FOR JUSTICE FOR UNPAID WORKERS IN GHANA

On Sunday, 19th April 2026, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp, delivered a strong message addressing the growing hardship faced by workers who have not been paid for several months.
The Archbishop expressed deep concern over the situation of railway workers in Ghana who are reportedly owed up to fourteen months of unpaid salaries. He said this issue goes beyond the railway sector, reflecting the wider challenges faced by many Ghanaian workers who are either underpaid or have not received their wages at all.
He expressed concern after hearing the issue reported on the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation news, which brought national attention to the crisis facing railway workers. He emphasized that the situation calls for urgent intervention from employers and authorities to restore dignity and justice to workers.
The Archbishop further stressed that the affected workers are struggling to survive, many are unable to care for their families, forcing children out of school, while health conditions continue to worsen. The prolonged non-payment has led to serious hardship and instability.
He referenced Leviticus 19:13, which states: “Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight.”
Archbishop Kwofie called on employers and authorities to urgently address the situation, emphasizing the need for fairness, justice, and respect for the dignity of labour.
