Archbishop John Bonaventure Kwofie, C.S.Sp., Leads Pilgrims into the Heights of Meteora

Days 3 and 4 of the Accra Archdiocesan Pilgrimage to Greece led pilgrims from the movement of cities into the quiet beauty and spiritual heights of Meteora.

Surrounded by monasteries built upon towering rock formations, the pilgrims encountered a living witness to centuries of prayer, sacrifice, contemplation, and complete devotion to God. Removed from the noise of daily life, Meteora became an invitation to silence, reflection, and deeper communion with Christ.

The pilgrimage also included a visit to the town of Naousa, renowned for its Xinomavro wine and vineyard tradition. Within the Catholic faith, wine carries profound spiritual symbolism — from the wedding feast at Cana, where Christ performed His first miracle, to the Holy Eucharist itself.

The transformation of grapes through crushing into wine offered pilgrims a quiet reflection on the Christian life itself: that even seasons of pressure, sacrifice, and breaking can become part of God’s process of forming the soul into something deeper, refined, and beautiful.

As the pilgrimage continues onward to Athens, the journey remains not simply one of travel, but of encounter, prayer, and spiritual renewal.

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”— Colossians 3:2
