Rev. Msgr. Pius Kpeglo Appeals for Greater Support for Distressed Priests at Jubilee Celebrations

Rev. Msgr. Pius Kpeglo has called on priests, religious, and lay faithful to strengthen their support for distressed priests, stressing that the well-being of clergy remains a serious concern for the universal Church.
Speaking during the Jubilee Celebrations at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka, Accra, on June 23, 2026, Rev. Msgr. Kpeglo emphasized that the concern raised by Pope Leo XIV regarding priests experiencing difficulties should not be overlooked.
He noted that many priests silently face emotional and psychological struggles and require the support, encouragement, and companionship of their brother priests and the wider Church community. He explained that caring for priests is not the responsibility of the clergy alone but a shared responsibility involving the entire Catholic community.
Reflecting on his 60 years of priestly ministry, the senior priest acknowledged that priests, despite their dedication to serving God’s people, can experience moments of loneliness, pressure, and emotional challenges. He therefore appealed to priests to strengthen bonds of fraternity, regularly check on one another, and create an environment where open communication and mutual support can flourish.
Recalling painful moments when Ghana experienced cases of suicide involving priests and religious brothers, Rev. Msgr. Kpeglo described the incidents as deeply heartbreaking. While acknowledging that the exact causes may not always be known, he noted that isolation and lack of support could contribute to personal struggles.
He encouraged the faithful to recognize the sacrifices priests make in their ministry and to support them through prayer, friendship, encouragement, and genuine concern. According to him, acts of compassion and care can help priests overcome difficult moments and continue serving the Church with renewed strength and hope.
Rev. Msgr. Kpeglo urged priests to take greater responsibility for one another by building stronger relationships and ensuring that no priest feels alone in times of difficulty. He encouraged those present to share Pope Leo XIV’s message in their parishes and communities, emphasizing that caring for priests is essential to strengthening the Church’s mission.
He concluded by praying that God would continue to strengthen priests in their vocation, sustain them through challenges, and grant them the grace to remain faithful to their calling.
