Pope asks Vatican media to try to increase their audience

Francis visited for the first time the headquarters of Vatican News, which brings together L’Osservatore Romano, Vatican Radio, the Vatican Television Center and the official website of the Holy See.

It is the new communication department of the Vatican, created in 2015 to bring together all the media of the Holy See.

There he greeted many of his workers and even showed him live how the cover of L’Osservatore Romano is made.

Afterwards, Francis visited the Vatican Radio chapel, where he prayed the prayer for Social Communications.

FRANCISCO
“Teach us to go where no one wants to go, to take time to understand, to pay attention to the essential, not to be distracted by the superfluous.”

Later he visited the Vatican Radio studios, where he went live to greet the listeners, although he also left a message for workers and leaders of the medium.

FRANCISCO
“I only have one concern – there are many reasons to worry about Radio Vaticana, about L’Osservatore Romano – but there is one that touches my heart a lot: how many listen to the radio and how many read L’Osservatore Romano”.

This is an uncomfortable question. Probably the Pope asks because the Holy See allocates 43 million each year to its media. Some 500 people work there. The Pope asked them to find a way to take advantage of all the resources they have to reach more people.

FRANCISCO
“Because there is a danger – in all organizations -, the danger of being a beautiful organization, of doing a beautiful job but not getting where it has to go.”

It was a very cordial visit organized by the 160 years of L’Osservatore Romano and the 90 of Radio Vaticana.

Francisco thanked the workers for their dedication and exchanged greetings with them.

It was the second time that Francis left the Vatican for Rome after the second wave of coronavirus. He looked happy to be able to go out and be around people.
