Eurocup. UEFA President visits the Pope: “Thank you for loving football”
On the eve of the start of the European Championship, whose first match will be in Rome, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin presented the Pope with a replica of the trophy.
“Thank you for inviting us, thank you for loving football and thank you for everything you do. We respect him a lot, all of us, the whole organization ”.
“I give it to him … so we can count on a special blessing.”
The president of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina took the opportunity to start the competition with an advantage, thanks to the papal blessing. His selection opens the European Championship against Turkey at the Olympic stadium in Rome.
Among those present were former athletes such as the Portuguese Luis Figo.
The Pope gave them a book called “Sport, According to Pope Francis.”
The coronavirus forced the Eurocup to be delayed and with this visit its organizers, to avoid further problems, have decided to resort to divine intercession.
