Smiley Stars, Influential Women, Leos of Ghana donate to teenage girls in Vakpo
The Smiley Stars Foundation in collaboration with the influential Women Foundation, Accra Gye Nyame Leo Club and Accra City Leo Club, put smiles on the faces of teenage girls in the Volta Region by donating items such as sanitary pads, exercise books, notebooks, pens, pencils and Mathematical sets.
The Activity, dubbed School Dey Bii, is an initiative to curb teenage pregnancies and school dropout in the rural communities in Ghana and to boost the educational enthusiasm of young girls.
The maiden edition of School Dey Bii saw 90 adolescent girls and 24 young girls from 3 schools in Vakpo; Vakpo Roman Catholic primary and Junior High schools, Vakpo District Assembly Junior High School and the Evangelical Presbyterian primary school educated on the essence of education, having a goal and disciplining oneself in order to achieve the goal.
Miss Agartha Mensah, a student of the University of Ghana, Legon and the founder of the Smiley Stars Foundation, stated that menstrual poverty, not getting enough rest and time to study because they have to go and sell for their parents or guidance after school before they can get something to eat are some of the challenges most teenagers face in the rural communities which deprive them of achieving their goals.
Miss Agartha added that some of the teenage girls lost their virginity as a result of peer influence.
She, therefore, admonished them to focus on their studies, practice responsible behaviours and should always be bold to say no to sex. These, she said, would help them become the best version of themselves as they grow.
