Archbishop Kwofie Calls for Tougher Anti-Corruption Measures and Renewed Fight Against Galamsey.

In a determined fight against injustice and environmental degradation in the country, the Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp , Metropolitan Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, has proposed lifetime imprisonment for culprits found guilty of corrupt practices in the country.

During the climax of the Maiden Rosary Congress at the Christ the King Catholic Church, at Cantonments, the Archbishop expressed his concern with recent corrupt practices in the country, noting that, “grievous acts cry aloud to heaven for justice.”

Citing President John Dramani Mahama’s prior suggestion of six-month sentences for fast-tracked corruption cases, Archbishop Kwofie deemed it “too generous,” calling for lifetime terms to prevent corruption and prevent public suffering.

He said, “You suggested a six-month custodial sentence. If I could say anything, it is this. You were too generous. I dare propose to add to the debate, the law notwithstanding that the culprit could serve, not for six months, not for one year, not for ten years but for life because he or she has stolen public money”.

Touching on illegal mining, Archbishop Kwofie also renewed calls to combat illegal mining, noting its persistence though “our President made a promise in his social contract with the Ghanaian people to end this menace within 120 days from assuming office, it unfortunately persists.”

In addition, he warned of environmental degradation leading to poisoned water, depleted soil, and future health crises and called on Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of Ghana to intervene on the citizens’ behalf just as the Blessed Virgin Mary does.

He said, “Maama, it is time to sit down again with Paapa and speak to his heart. Your voice, like that of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Wedding feast at Cana, can save the wedding and the couple.”

Recalling the 2024 Environmental Prayer Walk against galamsey, he challenged leaders in the country to avoid negligence to protect future generations from various diseases and deformities in childbirth.
