Pope Leo XIV has called on Christians and people of goodwill to stand in solidarity in promoting the equal dignity of men and women as the world marks International Women’s Day.

Delivering his message during the Angelus at St. Peter’s Square on March 8, 2026, the Holy Father urged pilgrims and faithful across the globe to renew their commitment to recognizing the equal dignity of both sexes in the human family, while remaining firmly grounded in the Gospel.

The Pope also offered special prayers for women who have experienced discrimination, noting that such injustices often begin in childhood and persist into adulthood.

Addressing a question from a reader on violence against women, the pontiff stressed the need for stronger collaboration between schools and the Church to promote what he described as a “culture of respect” among young people.

According to the Pope, fostering respect and equality within educational and faith communities is essential in combating discrimination and violence against women.

International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, originated in the early 20th century and has since evolved into a global day of advocacy, celebration, and fundraising. The day highlights and promotes women’s rights while recognizing their social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.
