Pope Leo XIV has called for greater ethical responsibility in the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing the need to safeguard human dignity and promote the common good as AI continues to reshape society.

In a message released on July 8, 2026, and signed on his behalf by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy Father addressed participants at the AI for Good Global Summit, taking place in Geneva from July 7–10. The summit, convened by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in collaboration with other UN agencies and the Swiss government, focuses on the transformative impact of AI and its potential to address major global challenges.

In his message, Pope Leo XIV explained that his encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, emerged from extensive dialogue with people who develop, study, and interact with artificial intelligence. He noted that the document was inspired not only by conversations with experts but also by growing concerns over the misuse of AI technologies.

The Pope highlighted “the troubling accounts of the potential misuses of algorithms and the loss of human agency in critical areas,” stressing that these developments underscore the urgent need for ethical reflection and responsible governance of AI.

Addressing summit participants, the Holy Father stated: “As you are convening to reflect upon AI, which raises some of the major questions of our time regarding the future of humanity, I would like to assure you of the Holy See’s presence and openness to dialogue, especially in this epochal turning point.”

He reaffirmed that the protection of the human person must remain at the heart of technological advancement. He expressed the Holy See’s willingness to engage with scientists, policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders in identifying pathways that advance the common good while ensuring a dignified life for all.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind Magnifica humanitas, Pope Leo XIV said the encyclical was shaped by listening to scientists and engineers working to harness technology to alleviate human suffering, political leaders striving to establish just regulations, and parents and educators concerned about the future of younger generations. Their diverse experiences, he noted, reveal both the immense promise and the significant challenges posed by artificial intelligence.

Concluding his message, Pope Leo assured participants of his prayers. He encouraged constructive dialogue and thoughtful deliberation that will guide AI development toward serving humanity with justice, responsibility, and respect for human dignity.
