Residents of Castel Gandolfo have warmly welcomed Pope Leo XIV as he begins his summer stay at the papal residence, expressing joy at the revival of a long-standing tradition that has brought Popes closer to the local community for centuries.
Speaking to Vatican News, the Polish Salesian priest, Fr. Tadeusz Rozmus, SDB, parish priest of the Pontifical Parish of St. Thomas of Villanova, said the community is delighted to host the Holy Father and looks forward to the spiritual and pastoral encounters that will accompany his stay.
Reflecting on visits by previous Popes, Fr. Rozmus described them as memorable and deeply meaningful occasions that strengthened the bond between the faithful and the Successor of St. Peter.
“They left us with beautiful memories,” he said, noting that parishioners experienced the fatherly closeness of the Popes through their presence, prayers, and interactions with the local community. He expressed hope that this tradition would continue well beyond the Pope’s summer residence.
Fr. Rozmus also recalled the Pope’s recent greeting from the balcony of the Apostolic Palace, describing it as an unexpected and joyful moment for both the parish and the wider community. He added that the faithful are eagerly anticipating the Angelus prayer and other public encounters with the Holy Father during his stay.
This year’s summer residence holds particular historical significance as it coincides with the 400th anniversary of the tradition of papal summer stays at Castel Gandolfo. The custom began in 1626 under Pope Urban VIII, and the local community looks forward to commemorating the milestone alongside the Diocese and civil authorities.
According to Fr. Rozmus, Pope Leo XIV has indicated that he intends to dedicate this period to prayer, rest, reading, and sports. The community, he said, hopes the Holy Father will enjoy a peaceful and restorative holiday in the scenic lakeside town.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV is expected to share lunch with approximately 200 people experiencing povertyon Saturday, July 11, atBorgo Laudato Si’, located within the Pontifical Gardens of Castel Gandolfo.
The initiative, titled “Lunch with the Pope,” will begin with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist using the Liturgy for the Care of Creation. The programme will also include a welcome reception, a guided tour of Borgo Laudato Si’, and a shared meal with the Holy Father.
The event is being organised with the support of Catholic charities, parish communities, volunteer organisations serving vulnerable people across Rome, and local businesses that have donated food and other resources to ensure the success of the initiative.
Pope Leo XIV’s summer stay combines a period of personal renewal with opportunities for prayer, pastoral outreach, and solidarity with those most in need, reflecting the Church’s commitment to both spiritual and social care.
