Pope Francis is passionate about football and this weekend he had two joys: his country’s team won the America’s Cup and Italy’s won the Eurocup.
The Argentine triumph occurred in the early hours of Sunday and was their first Copa América after 28 years. Italy, where Francisco lives, won on penalties against England and is European champion for the first time since 1968.
The medical report for this Monday indicates that the Pope “shared the joy for the victory of the Argentine and Italian teams with his relatives.”
He adds that he focused on the meaning of sport and its values, and on the athletic ability to accept any result, even defeat.
“Only in this way, in the face of life’s difficulties, we can always get involved, fight without giving up, with hopeful confidence,” the Pope said, according to the press office statement.
Francisco is in recovery and will stay a few more days in the hospital.
