Priestly Vows Renewed at Chrism Mass at Holy Spirit Cathedral

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra held its annual Chrism Mass at Holy Spirit Cathedral on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, drawing a large number of priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay faithful from across the Archdiocese.
The celebration, which forms an important part of Holy Week, highlighted the unity of the Church and the renewal of priestly commitment.
In his homily, the Auxiliary Bishop of Accra, John Kobina Louis, emphasized the importance of priests being anointed and empowered by the Holy Spirit to serve the people of God. He reminded priests that their ministry should be a blessing, not a burden, urging them to preach hope, compassion, and God’s presence, especially to those who are suffering.
He further called on priests to liberate those trapped by fear, superstition, or false teachings, and to guide the spiritually blind toward clarity and a deeper understanding of the faith. He stressed that priestly ministry must be both sacramental and practical, combining spiritual care with tangible support for the oppressed and vulnerable.
In a beautiful ritual, Anthony Narh Asare blessed the holy oils, invoking the power of the Holy Spirit to channel grace and healing through them. The blessed oils, the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism, will serve the faithful throughout the year.
During the liturgy, priests of the Archdiocese of Accra renewed their vows in a solemn rite led by the Archbishop of Accra, John Bonaventure Kwofie. This renewal reaffirmed their commitment to serve the Church with dedication and strengthened their unity with their bishop.
In his remarks, Archbishop Kwofie expressed gratitude to all who attended the celebration. He thanked the priests, religious, and lay faithful for their presence and support, encouraging continued unity and collaboration within the Church.
As the Chrism Mass concluded, the blessed oils were distributed to parishes, symbolizing the Church’s unity and mission, and empowering communities for the year ahead.
