The recipe for children to fall in love with reading

This teacher says that helping children develop a passion for literature and classics should be a priority. As a teacher, she says, she realized that great works are often talked about in the wrong way.

“Classical literature has a very important role, it is part of our western culture. FLASH Our literature is very important, from it we get our ideas, our imaginary narratives, the ways to build ideas over time. That is why we have a great canon of books, it is a kind of collection of thinkers throughout time. “

His book “Before Austen is Aesop” is the result of 10 years of research. What began as a personal project became a comprehensive guide for parents and educators to promote a better reading of classical literature among children and adolescents.

“It leans on my research, it’s not just my point of view on which books are great works. I used objective criteria. I had to make judgments, but I was objective. The term ‘Great Books’ has to do with their role in the development of the history of literature and how children have adopted them over the centuries ”.

He has divided the work into two parts. The first is a list of titles in chronological order, from antiquity to the late 20th century. It marks them with the level of reading and interest and analyzes the themes and characteristics of each work.

In the second part he talks about what he calls “three adventures”, or three ways of experiencing Literature. It is a guide on how to study the Big Books with little readers. And it alerts parents if there is any content that they should explain to their children.

“Many of these books may not be what you want your children to read, because they are not in line with faith. So for those books, I use a label that says ‘Notice to Parents.’

The idea is to give children and adolescents the opportunity to build a solid foundation with literary classics. A base that they can then apply to contemporary works. A journey that begins with Aesop’s fables and reaches Jane Austen and beyond.
