Pope reminds that devotion to the saints should not fall into superstition

The Pope began the general audience by joking about the topic of catechesis: the communion of saints.

FRANCISCO
Many times we say in the Creed: I believe in the communion of saints. But if you ask us what that means, I remember that, as a child, he would immediately reply: “Oh, it’s the saints when they receive communion.”

He explained that the communion of saints means asking the saints in Heaven to intercede with God to meet their needs. He said that it is important to understand that the one who performs the miracle is God, not the saint, who is an intermediary.

FRANCISCO
It is not something magical, it is not a superstition, the devotion to the saints. It is simply talking to a brother, a sister, who is before God, who led a just life, a holy life, a model life and now is before God. And I speak with this brother, with this sister, and I ask for his intercession for my needs.

At the end of his weekly catechesis, a person began to shout, although the Pope’s microphone made it barely perceptible.

However, Francisco did not let what happened go by and interrupted his speech.

FRANCIS
I would like to end by praying for him. Our brother who suffers, poor. He screamed because he suffers. He has some need. Let us not be deaf to the need of this brother. Let us pray together to Our Lady for him.

The man had shouted against the use of masks and some offenses against the Pope and the Church.

During this cycle of catechesis the Pope ends by saying a prayer to Saint Joseph. Francisco revealed something personal. He said that this is a prayer that he has prayed every day for more than 40 years.
