Pope Leo XIV is making steady progress in his postoperative recovery following lung surgery, with his medical team reporting positive signs of improvement at Gemelli Hospital in Italy.

On Thursday, the third day after the surgery, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Prof. Stefano Margaritora provided an update on the Holy Father’s condition. They reported that a chest X-ray showed good recovery of the operated lung and that the Pope was independently carrying out his daily activities. His physiotherapy sessions also included a full range of physical exercises, indicating that his recovery was progressing normally.

The Holy Father concelebrated Mass on Thursday morning in a room specially prepared for the occasion on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, as he had done the previous day. The Holy See Press Office also announced that he resumed his meetings on Thursday afternoon with Archbishop Paolo Rudelli, Substitute for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State.

On Friday, the fourth day after the operation, the medical team reported further improvement in the Pope’s overall condition. Respiratory physiotherapy sessions continued, while his postoperative recovery enabled him to carry out his normal daily activities entirely independently.

The Holy See Press Office further reported that Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass in the room prepared on the hospital’s 10th floor. During the celebration, he distributed Holy Communion to members of the hospital’s medical and nursing staff, as well as members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie Corps who attended the Mass.

In his homily, the Holy Father expressed gratitude to the doctors, nurses, orderlies, and other healthcare professionals for their daily dedication to caring for patients. He also acknowledged the continuous attention and care they had shown him throughout his hospital stay.

Meanwhile, the Holy See Press Office confirmed that the customary Sunday Angelus prayer led by the Pope would take place as usual.
